Open Source Database Leader Eludes Industry Downturn with Major New Commercial Customers
SEATTLE - (October 21, 2002)
MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that it set a new record high for commercial sales in its quarterly sales period ending September 30, 2002. Revenues for the month of September were seven times revenues for the same month last year, contributing to a 21 percent compound monthly growth rate for the company so far in the 2002 calendar year.
New commercial customers such as Novell, Hyperion, BMC Software, Agilent Technologies, Vocera Communications and others have driven MySQL's growth in recent months. (Note to press: please see related news release, Novell and MySQL Partner to Ship the MySQL Database with NetWare", released today.)
"Organizations today are demanding more out of their technology, while at the same time, making cost savings a top priority. This is where MySQL offers an unbeatable offering - a high performance database solution that also leads to much better profitability for our customers," said Marten Mickos, MySQL CEO. "Our rapid business growth in the last months is proof that MySQL meets the needs of a growing portion of the commercial market."
With a dual-licensing open source business model, MySQL provides the MySQL database at no cost under the GPL free software/open source license, and it also sells commercial licenses to organizations that want to develop and distribute MySQL, with no open source requirements, for use with their commercial products. With the availability of the commercial license option, leading companies are now increasingly embedding or integrating the high-performance MySQL database with major software, hardware and other electronic devices.
MySQL's dual-licensing structure supports its open source user community with a sustainable business model, and this community, in turn, is the engine behind the company's commercial business.
Vocera Communications has selected MySQL as the backend relational database management system for its new instant voice communications system designed to improve communications for in-building mobile personnel. Recently the winner of a prestigious DEMOmobile DEMOgod award, Vocera's unique software/hardware application consists of the Vocera Server Software and the wearable Vocera Communications badge. The Vocera Server Software runs on MySQL and provides the system's control and intelligence. The lightweight communications badge is a Wi-Fi client with built-in speakerphone capability to provide voice controlled communications within 802.11b networked buildings or campuses.
Dr. Robert Shostak, principal founder, chairman, and chief technology officer at Vocera, and the creator of the Paradox database, chose MySQL for the Vocera System. "MySQL is the tool we use as the central repository for user profile information. Vocera selected MySQL for its stability and performance. The cost-performance ratio proved to be a high value for our system, and we are able to pass these benefits through to our customers."
MySQL AB develops, markets and supports the MySQL database server, the world's most popular open source database. With an estimated 4 million installations and 27,000 downloads per day, MySQL is the de facto open source database leader and is quickly becoming the core of many high-volume, business-critical applications. Major corporations such as Yahoo!, Lucent Technologies, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, Motorola, NASA, Silicon Graphics, HP, Xerox and Cisco rely on the ultra-fast, highly-reliable MySQL database. MySQL is available under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (GPL) or a non-GPL commercial license. For more information about MySQL, please go to www.mysql.com.
