"We've experienced tremendous growth in the U.S. recently, and we expect that this market will continue to dominate and define our rapid expansion," said Mårten Mickos, MySQL CEO. "While we are still solidly committed to being a global company, attracting the best talent from around the world, we also want to focus resources on our key markets to maximize hands-on contact and overall service. With the new subsidiary, we are taking the first step in establishing our worldwide marketing and sales engine in the U.S. that will complement and support MySQL's development and operational hubs in Europe."
Commercial Sales Based in Seattle
The launch of the MySQL U.S. subsidiary will lead to a significant increase in MySQL's already solid presence here. MySQL's sales force, led by vice president of sales, Larry Stefonic, is based in Seattle, Washington. The company's sales efforts are focused on acquiring commercial customers, or those organizations that are developing and re-selling a product containing MySQL code. MySQL commercial customers include Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems, Xerox and IntruVert Networks.
"Companies from many different sectors are now taking advantage of MySQL's unique combination of speed and resource efficiency to power their products," noted Stefonic. "There's a lot of momentum right now, and we're looking forward to continuing to grow our sales staff and U.S. presence to keep up with the interest."
While the MySQL database server is available at no cost to everyone under the standard open-source GNU General Public License (GPL), MySQL AB offers non-GPL commercial licenses to commercial customers. This dual licensing structure allows MySQL AB to promote open source ideology and, at the same time, establish a business model that supports it.
For more information about a MySQL commercial license, please email sales@mysql.com or contact Larry Stefonic at U.S. (425) 743-5635.
