A NetWare-Optimized Version of the MySQL Open Source Database Comes with Full Commercial License
BRAINSHARE EUROPE, Barcelona – September 8, 2003 — MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that a commercially-licensed version of the MySQL® database ships with Novell NetWare 6.5, the latest version of Novell’s platform for advanced network services. NetWare 6.5 comes with a commercially-licensed version of MySQL 4.0, giving NetWare users the benefit of developing and distributing high performance, low-cost MySQL database applications without open source license requirements. MySQL AB CEO Marten Mickos will be speaking about the MySQL database at the EMEA Partner Summit at Novell’s BrainShare Europe on September 9.
“Novell has clearly embraced open source software and standards with NetWare 6.5,” said Bertrand Matthelié, MySQL AB director of Alliances. “With NetWare-optimized versions of proven, tier-one open source software, NetWare users can now easily build business-critical Web-based or enterprise applications. Being the standard database for NetWare 6.5 will reinforce MySQL’s position as a true multi-platform database which runs on virtually every major open source and proprietary operating system.”
The MySQL database is a high-performance relational database management system for Web site and business application development and deployment. MySQL is available under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (GPL), but Novell is shipping a commercially-licensed version of MySQL with NetWare 6.5, giving NetWare users the freedom to create commercial MySQL applications with no additional license cost.
“NetWare 6.5 hosts many of the top open source solutions, including all software in the popular open source ’AMP’ developer suite -- Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl,” said Doug Knight, Novell vice president of business development. “We are seeing strong customer demand to run the thousands of Web-based applications written for MySQL for other platforms on NetWare 6.5 servers.”
MySQL AB employs a “dual licensing” business model in which the MySQL database is available for no cost under the free software/open-source GPL license and also under a non-GPL commercial license. With a non-GPL commercial license, an organization can sell a MySQL-based product without making it open source. This dual licensing approach allows MySQL AB to promote the open source development and distribution model while at the same time establishing a business that supports it.
A commercially-licensed version of MySQL for NetWare is now included with every copy of NetWare 6.5. NetWare 6.5 evaluation software is available at http://www.novell.com/netware. A GPL version of MySQL for NetWare 6 and higher is available for download from the MySQL Web site at http://www.mysql.com.
MySQL AB and Novell will provide technical support for MySQL units received through Novell. MySQL AB offers several levels of technical support, from email access to complete 24 X 7 support. More information on technical support, consulting or training from the experts at MySQL AB can be found at http://www.mysql.com.
MySQL AB develops, markets and supports the MySQL database server, the world's most popular open source database. With an estimated 4 million installations and over 30,000 downloads per day, MySQL is quickly becoming the core of many high-volume, business-critical applications. Major corporations such as Yahoo!, Google, Lucent Technologies, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, Motorola, NASA, and Texas Instruments rely on the ultra-fast, highly reliable MySQL database. MySQL is available under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (GPL) or a non-GPL commercial license. For more information about MySQL, please go to www.mysql.com.
